Sarajevo is situated close to the center of the triangular form of Bosnia and Herzegovina in southeastern Europe. Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, is a lively city of 400,000 people, nestled in a valley, mainly within the Bosniak-Croat Federation, but with parts in the Republican Srpska. It is one of the most historically exciting cities in Europe. It is the place where the Western & Eastern Roman Empire divide; where the people of the Eastern traditional east, the Ottoman south and the Roman Catholic west, met, lived and warred. It has been an illustration of historical disorder and the clash of civilizations, as well as a beacon of hope for peace and patience through multi-cultural combination. Weather: Sarajevo has a gentle continental climate, lying between the climatic zones of central Europe to the north and the Mediterranean to the south. The average annual temperature is 9.5 °C, with January (-1.3 °C avg.) being the coldest month of the year and July (19.1 °C avg.) the warmest. On an average, Sarajevo has 68 summer days per year (temperature greater than or equal to 30.0 °C). The city normally experiences mildly cloudy skies, with an average annual cloud cover of 59%. The cloudiest month is December (75% average cloud cover) while the clearest is August (37%). Moderate precipitation occurs fairly consistently throughout the year, with an average 170 days of rainfall. Culture: Sarajevo has been home to many different religions for centuries, giving the city a range of varied cultures. Bosnian Muslims, Orthodox, Catholics and Jews all shared the city while maintaining distinct identities. Today, however, the city is tremendously Bosnian Muslim, but in recent years many returnees have been noticed as well as a rising number of foreigners from Eastern Asia. Food: Sarajevo has numerous shops selling burek (meat pie, sold in layers by weight or by piece), cevapi and pizza stores. Pita (burek, sirnica, krompirusa, tikvenica, zeljanica etc) is a phyllo type pasty pie usually presented in several varieties - cheese (Bosnian cheese called "young cheese" alike ricotta and never aged) (sirnica), cheese and spinach (zeljanica), pumpkin (tikvinica), and spicy potato (krompirusa). It is regularly served and inspired with a traditional yogurt sauce which resembles sour cream. Festivals: Sarajevo is regionally and globally renowned for its Sarajevo Film Festival (SFF) and its Sarajevo Jazz Festival. The SFF has been hosted in Sarajevo at the National Theater in the center of Sarajevo and has hosted such world-renowned actors, directors, and musicians. |
